[Anaheim Resort Transit] Anaheim Resort Transit

Anaheim Resort Transit [offsite link] -- There's a new shuttle bus system in the Anaheim Resort district. (It started up in May 2002.) Routes include a shuttle bus between the Hilton, Marriott, Convention Center and Disney. (Routes C, E, M.) All routes serve the Disneyland dropoff area. Day passes are $3 per ride if you pay when you board, $3 per day if you pay in advance. Kids 9 and under ride free with paying adult. Two-day passes ($6) and five-day passes ($12) are available from a kiosk in the Hilton and Marriott lobbies. [Info as of Sep. 2003]

[Anaheim Resort Map] Some limitations the system has: It goes only as far west as Walnut St., as far south as Garden Grove Blvd., as far east as Manchester Ave./Anaheim Blvd., and as far north as Vermont (a little bit past Ball Road. So it won't get you to the train station, the bus station, the ballpark, or the Pond. It also looks like it doesn't stop at any full-service supermarkets. (There are various liquor stores and small convenience stores near many of the hotels, of course.) Check their website for current information or call 888-364-ARTS. [Info updated as of Feb. 2006]

Hours: The service begins one-hour before the opening of "area attractions and the convention center" and ends a half-hour after they close. In August, Disneyland usually closes at 11pm or midnight. [Info as of Sep. 2003]

[Anaheim Bus Stop] Anaheim now has scads of brand-spanking new green metal or metal-and-wood bus benches all over the city. In the Anaheim Resort District, they have a shade shelter over them. Some are for ART, some for OCTA (see below), some for MTA (L.A. County), some for all three. Check the signs before sitting down and waiting.

[OCTA Bus Stop] Orange County

[OCTA Bus] The Orange County Transportation Authority [offsite link] (OCTA) operates busses in Orange County, including Anaheim. We'll be near the intersection of Harbor Blvd. and Katella Ave. The Harbor Blvd. bus (north-south) is Route 43; the Katella bus (east-west) is Route 50. Other routes are also available.

As it happens, you can take the bus to/from both local Amtrak stations. Route 43 serves the Fullerton station, and Route 50 serves Anaheim Stadium (Edison Field).

Bus fare is $1.25 per ride. (No transfers.) Day passes are $3.00, you can buy them on the bus. You can also buy a pack of ten day passes online. (These will work regardless of whether one person is going to use them for ten days, or ten people use them all at once, or any other combination.) [Info as of Mar. 2006]

Orange County's bus service runs all night on a reduced "Night Owl" schedule. The Harbor Blvd. and Katella Ave. (43 and 50) routes run hourly between about midnight and 5:00 am, seven days a week including holidays. Print out Route 43 (Harbor Blvd) or Route 50 (Katelle Ave), and figure out cross-routes from there. Or use their point-to-point routing gizmo.

OCTA busses have bike racks and wheelchair lifts.

Los Angeles County

Some routes operated by Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority [offsite link] (MTA, aka Metro Rapid) stretch down into Anaheim. In particular, MTA route 460 comes right by our hotel, at Harbor and Convention Way. Please note that not every OCTA bus stop will also be an MTA bus stop.

The MTA fares start at $1.25, and $1.80 for the first zone on freeway express routes; see their web site or call them at 800-266-6883 (800-COMMUTE) for more info on fares and routes.

It is possible to get to Anaheim from LAX for as little as $1.80. [offsite link]

Planning Your Bus Rides

You should check out the Automated Transit Trip Planning System. [offsite link] You can give it "Disneyland" and "Union Station" and it'll show you the times and fares to take Route 43 to the Fullerton Amtrak station, and the train into Los Angeles Union Station. Or, in other words, it's the transit equivalent of all those street-mapping web sites out there.

You may get wildly differing results depending on whether you opt for fastest itinerary, fewest transfers, or minimal walking; the above route was for "fewest transfers, leaving tomorrow at noon." "Fastest itinerary" takes you on a mix of OCTA, MTA, Amtrak, Metrol Link, and Metro Rail. There are other options for telling it when you want to leave or arrive or whatever.

[Bench]

Miscellaneous Bus Options

Remember I mentioned all those bus benches all over town, especially all over the Anaheim resort district? There are various shuttle services, some operated by the hotels, some by the usual airport shuttle companies, and some just focus on getting you from Anaheim to the malls and other area attractions.

This partial list and photos are provided for your information. L.A.con IV does not endorse or recommend any particular mode of transportation.
