FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

L.A.Con IV to Present Special Category Hugo Award

Interactive Video Games to be honored at Worldcon

L.A.con IV is delighted to announce that a special category Hugo Award will be given in conjunction with the 64th World Science Fiction Convention to honor outstanding work in the area of interactive video games.

From games designed for the X-Box to massive multiplayer online gaming, video games are now played by half of all Americans and Europeans, and in even greater numbers in Japan and other nations.

Just as they have increased in popularity, games have also changed and become richer over the years. No longer the simple flickering photons of Pong or Asteroids, the improvement in computer chips has given games not only better graphics but the capability of telling more involving, fully developed stories.

Games are not just something that some science fiction fans do. We believe that interactive video games have become an important part of the tapestry that is science fiction. And for that reason, we have decided to include them among the Hugo Categories for the first time.

The Hugo Awards are granted each year for excellence in science fiction and fantasy literature, art, media, and fan activities. This year's "Additional Category" recognizes the amazing quality and quantity of genre-related video games: a majority of the most popular and creative interactive video games use science fiction and fantasy themes, images, characters, and story lines.

The Additional Category Hugo Awards may be given by a Worldcon to recognize work outside the scope of the usual categories of awards granted. The category - and whether to add one or not - is at the discretion of each year's committee and is treated exactly like one of the annual categories.

In recent years, Additional Categories have included Best Cover Art and Best Website, and they have been used to test categories to possibly add to the annual slate of awards. This year, Interactive Video Games, already a major part of the world's entertainment, joins their ranks.

The Hugo Awards nomination ballots will be released after January 1, 2006. In order to nominate for the 2006 Hugo Awards, you must have been an attending or supporting member of Interaction, the 63rd Worldcon, or you must be an attending or supporting member of L.A.con IV by January 30, 2006.

For more information about joining the 64th World Science Fiction Convention, see us online at http://www.laconiv.org/

Only members of L.A.con IV will be permitted to vote for the final slate of nominees.

Help carry on the proud, bold tradition of Space Cadets (and Space Invaders) everywhere!
